US rolls on, routs Serbia 110-84 in women’s basketball
Diana Taurasi broke her own records for three-point field goals made and attempted while leading the United States women’s basketball team to a 110-84 victory over Serbia Wednesday afternoon.
Alba Torrens scored 32 points to lead Spain to an 89-68 win over China Wednesday as the Spaniards improved their position in women’s basketball group play behind the undefeated USA and Canada.
“That’s a bit disrespectful, I would say”.
The U.S. women improve to 3-0 and will face Canada on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Team USA’s only blemishes in the first half were 11 turnovers and a fist full of steals for Serbia. “Those games are hard”. On the note of breaking records, Diana Taurasi breaks her own record and American Olympic record with six three-pointers in one game. The Serbians out-blocked the US (6-0) and converted 17 of 30 spikes in the set, but the final score (25-21) was only close because of four Serbian service errors.
They played the first quarter nearly as well as they could’ve hoped in taking a 17-16 lead before Taurasi keyed a 15-4 run with three straight 3s.
Tina Charles, who finished with 15 points, got going in the second quarter to help the USA extend the advantage to 22 at the half. Each team scored twice more to make it 31-21 after the first period. She finished with 25 points, six assists and three rebounds.
The U.S. defense held Serbia to just 3-of-17 from the field (.176) in the second quarter, while at the midway point, the United States of America was 57.6 percent from the field (19-33 FGs), 53.8 percent from 3-point (7-13 3-pt FGs) and a flawless 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Taurasi might have had higher totals, but she sat the majority of the second half.
The U.S. squad shored up their defensive woes for the third set, however, riding a couple big blocks to victory. That led to to a 24-17 United States of America lead and essentially put away Serbia in the opening set. Breanna Stewart, Angel McCoughtry and Maya Moore all scored in double figure. That’s almost 44 points per game.
