US routs Sweden 8-3 to win bronze at world juniors
The U.S. finished 5-0-0-2 and won its fourth medal in the last seven championships. Before that, it was 1998 when Helsinki and Hameenlinna, Finland hosted. Yes, the golden goal was blurry for Kapanen but those struggles at the start of the season with the Marlies were as good as forgotten.
The United States outplayed Sweden in both of the countries’ meetings at the 2016 World Junior Championships.
Matthew Tkachuk, the son of former National Hockey League player Keith Tkachuk, contributed two goals and an assist for the Americans who lost 1-0 to Sweden earlier in the tournament. Nashville Predators prospect and leading goal scorer Vladislav Kamenev took a misconduct penalty after arguing with officials.
Alex Nedeljkovic will be in net for Team USA after posting his first shutout of the tournament with 28 saves.

America scored four in the second period, and two in the third. He broke down the left wing before throwing a fake and beating Kahkonen. He swatted in a cross-crease pass from linemate Sonny Milano. Aho slapped the puck past a helpless Georgiev to the delight of the hometown crowd. He tipped in a point shot from Vili Saarijarvi, bringing the crowd to its feet. Up next, Finland’s Mikko Rantanen, who spent time with the Colorado Avalanche this year, tapped in a shot on the power play with 3:09 remaining.
But Andrei Svetlakov forced overtime with six seconds to go. Russian Federation would have a stretch of time in Finland’s zone and it felt like they were going to score any second, then Finland would race back the other way and have a long stretch in Russia’s zone, with a couple grade A scoring changes, then back the other way.
The 19-year-old goaltender will take some heat for cheating just far enough off his post to allow Igor Korshkov’s game-winner at 17:56 of the second period, but that was the only mark on an otherwise excellent 31-save performance.
