US Safety Agency Probes Honda Accord Air Bag Failures
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating reports that a defect in certain Honda Accords could prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash. The defect causes the air bag status indicator lamp to illuminate, and the air bag system is disabled until it is repaired.
The federal safety agency said consumers have filed 19 complaints claiming that the air bag controlling module, called an SRS module, failed.
Faulty airbag modules are to blame according to NHTSA, as they do not communicate the proper diagnostic trouble codes to mechanics.
“My son was driving my auto and did not make a turn and ran into a concrete block wall at about 50 miles per hour”, one complaint says.
“An inability of the SRS unit to communicate raises concern about the readiness of the entire supplemental restraints system”, the agency notes. “The air bags did not deploy”.
Based on NHTSA paperwork, the issue with the air bag management pc mannequin impacts some mannequin yr 2008 Accords. Several people complained that the computer had to be replaced to fix the problem.
Another complaint from an owner in Illinois said, “I had to pay out of pocket close to $500 for parts and labor (which) seems silly as this is a safety-related service”.
The investigation covers about 384,000 Accords, and the federal company will look into the scope and frequency of the alleged failure.
“Honda will cooperate with the NHTSA by way of the investigation course of, and we’ll proceed our personal inner evaluate of the out there info”, the corporate stated.
