US Speaker Paul Ryan quits, says it’s not because of Trump
When asked about the impact of the midterm elections on his decision, Ryan said politics wasn’t a factor.
Ah, but there’s the problem, and the reason Ryan’s decision to bail out for what I assume will be an obscenely remunerated job with an investment firm is so revealing. When I took this job, one of my conditions was that we aim high. “I have no regrets”.
That’s despite the fact that Ryan is just the latest of a record number of Republicans to forgo a run for re-election this fall.
“What I realise is if I am here for one more term my kids will only have a weekend dad. That’s it right there”. He noted that his oldest just turned 16, which was how old Ryan was when his father died. “It is understandable that Speaker Ryan is choosing at this point in his career to retire in order to spend more time with his wife and three teenage children”, said Bucshon.
Vice President Mike Pence said Ryan will continue to be a great representative for the people of Wisconsin through the rest of his term and will continue to work every day with him to keep our promises to the American people.
Health care: Republicans ultimately failed to repeal and replace the 2010 health care law.
“No one has been able to answer this for me: Why is Randy Bryce a better candidate to beat Paul Ryan?”.
Ryan’s retirement could signal to other Republicans that tough reelection bids might not be worth the fight.
Buck says Ryan will discuss his decision at a news conference Wednesday. “Electorates far more conservative than Wisconsin’s 1st have already elected Democrats in special elections in Wisconsin and across the country”. Four-term Rep. Dennis Ross is leaving as well, opening up a seat in a district that includes the Tampa Suburbs – and has the same partisan tilt on the presidential level as Ryan’s district. Trump got 52% of the vote here in 2012, underperforming Romney’s 54% mark.
Trade: As a free-market free trader, Ryan endured the president’s campaigning against and later jettisoning of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He also touts his “legacy of achievement that nobody can question”. Bob Kasten while he was attending college at Miami University of OH and later joined his staff. Another candidate is Nick Polce, an Army Green Beret and first-time candidate who raised a meager ,000 in the last filing period. Ryan also served as legislative director for then-Kansas Rep. Sam Brownback.
“It injects some more uncertainty to be sure”, said the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas.
Ryan’s announcement is certain to set off a major succession battle.
The bill’s chances in the Republican-controlled Senate were unclear.
“With his retirement announcement, Speaker Paul Ryan becomes the first casualty of the 2018 midterm election”, tweeted House Democrat Gerry Connolly. The loyalists to the president say you’re betraying him.
About a dozen committee chairmen are giving up their seats as well.
While his plans are uncertain once he steps down in January, Ryan has long said being speaker would be his last job in elected office. “He has always believed this [being speaker] is not a long-term thing”, said the source.
Conservatives will have a few things to show for this period of absolute control of the federal government, especially a large group of federal judges President Trump has appointed.
And while Ryan, a prolific fundraiser, repeatedly tapped into the energy and perhaps anger of the tea party movement to help Republicans win back the House in 2010, he was accused of being silent on the birtherism conspiracy theories about President Barack Obama that ran rampant in the movement. They often become lightning rods for political partisanship. Cathy Myers, a schoolteacher out of Janesville, is also running as a Democrat.
He had said he would come to a decision with his family sometime in the spring ahead of the June filing deadline in Wisconsin. The primary is August 14.
While many candidates will likely emerge in the coming months, the biggest name now eyeing Ryan’s seat is Paul Nehlen-a fringe political contender previously supported by Breitbart who openly endorses white supremacy.
In a statement, Stefanik called Ryan “a true friend and mentor”. I took it reluctantly, but I have given this job everything that I have.
