US sprint car racer killed in crash
A Sprint auto driver from Bucks County died from injuries suffered in a crash at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg Friday night.
The speedway canceled the rest of the program after the accident.
Reported earlier: A sprint auto driver died Friday night during pre-race practice laps at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg.
Jillian Sederholm of NBC News noted the accident occurred in the third turn and happened on “Kids Night” at the racetrack.
Campbell was doing warm-up laps at Williams Grove Speedway in Pennsylvania when his vehicle collided with a wall on the half-mile clay track.
Additional details about the crash were not clear.
The death follows a year of heightened scrutiny on the dangers involved in motorsports racing after NASCAR star Tony Stewart struck and killed a fellow driver in sprint-car race in New York last August.
Saturday’s races were also canceled, “out of the utmost respect for the Campbell family as well as for all speedway employees, staff, management and emergency personnel as they all attempt to deal with the tragedy at hand”.
