US Swimmers to be Questioned about
The two were taken off their flight from Brazil to the U.
The USOC has said the remaining swimmers are cooperating with the authorities.
Lochte said Wednesday they were at a gas station and got back in the taxi, the taxi driver did not move, and it was then that two robbers with guns and badges approached the auto and ordered the swimmers out of the vehicle and onto the ground, Lauer said. He didn’t provide details.
Conger and Bentz reportedly spoke to Brazilian officials after being removed from the plane, and were then released. On Wednesday, Rio officials said that they could find no evidence that the incident ever occurred. It said the USA committee had initially said otherwise, causing the confusion.
The U.S. State Department is urging all swimmers to cooperate with Brazilian authorities. A third swimmer, James Feigen was also being sought by police and has agreed to be interviewed. “Video shows swimmer “fighting” w/security at gas station @GMA”, he wrote.
Four US Olympic swimmers say they were robbed at gunpoint early Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, but Brazilian authorities say their accounts are contradictory.
Police showed up at the Olympic village in the morning to confiscate the passports of Lochte and Jimmy Feigen but found neither man there. No apologies from him or other athletes are needed. “I don’t know if there was a robbery or not”.
Rio games organisers defended their actions, saying they were just kids who were having fun and made a mistake. “They got back to the taxi, and when they told the taxi driver to go, he didn’t move”.
While he’s medaled often in the Olympic pool, Lochte’s accomplishments have always been overshadowed by teammate Michael Phelps – the most decorated Olympian in history.
The Ryan Lochte scandal-which has now been dubbed #LochteGate on Twitter-has taken yet another insane turn.
The elder Lochte said his son’s Olympic credential and cell phone weren’t taken during the incident early Sunday morning.
The incident actually involved the US Olympians breaking down a bathroom door at a gas station, and paying for the damages, the official – who has direct knowledge of the investigation, but was not authorized to speak publicly – told the Associated Press on Thursday.
The swimmers said in a previous statement issued by the USOC that they were robbed of wallets and personal items by armed individuals posing as police officers during a taxi ride from France’s hospitality venue back to the Olympic Village. The swimmers also could not say what time the events occurred.
“We stand by what he provided in that interview and signed off on”, Jeff Ostrow, his attorney, told CNN.
“Why would anybody fabricate anything?”
Lochte says they were told to get down on the ground, but he didn’t and they put a gun to his forehead.
Steve Bentz, father of Gunnar Bentz, when reached by phone late Wednesday night, said: “I really don’t want to say anything”, and hung up.
A judge ordered the seizure of the athletes’ passports after police said that there were too many inconsistencies in the initial account of the robbery.
