US tourist Jessica Colker killed in Grenada
An American woman was killed in a random attack while walking down a beach in the Caribbean.
The 39-year-old American was found on a deserted stretch of sun-splashed beach on the island of Grenada on Sunday, less than half a mile from where several Britons had been sunbathing. Her husband, Brian Van Melito, told police he fought with the man and called for help after getting away.
An autopsy released Tuesday cited extensive skull fracture and asphyxia as Colker’s cause of death, the website said.
Colker’s body was reportedly found on La Sagresse beach, a populated and well-known area associated with the La Sagesse resort, Yahoo News reported. There are no charges at this time, and police will not release his name, photo or criminal record, he said.
Colker’s husband was able to escape the attack unharmed, McIntyre said.
Colker worked as a physician’s assistant at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “We are deeply saddened by this horrific news”.
A dream vacation quickly turned into a nightmare for a couple visiting the island of Grenada.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this hard time”, the hospital said in a statement.
Ex-convict David Martin Benjamin admitted to the crime, according to Yahoo Travel.
McIntyre said the suspect was cooperating with the investigation but he declined to provide any information about the man, who can’t be identified under local laws unless he is formally charged.
They said they wanted to remember her for how she lived, not how she died. I don’t know how she was killed – maybe the attacker, or attackers, held her down in the water and drowned her, I just don’t know’.
‘I assume she’d kicked them off to go for a romantic walk with her husband on their first full day in paradise’.
