US trained Syria troops ‘not supported’

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier announced that Turkey was ready to begin a “comprehensive” fight against IS jihadists in Syria alongside the United States, after months of staying on the sidelines of the US-led coalition.
Ankara is waging a two-pronged bombing campaign against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebels as well as IS militants, following a wave of violence inside Turkey.
Despite the bad start, the Pentagon insisted it remains committed to the training program, which is a linchpin of a strategy that depends on local ground forces taking advantage of American air strikes to recapture territory seized by ISIS.

But experts say the alliance is fraught with potential contradictions, including Turkey’s focus on targeting Kurdish forces and a US reluctance to ally with Islamist rebels.

When asked if Syrians now going through the U.S. train-and-equip program were dropping out because of the incident, Davis said the number of trainees changes daily, but declined to give any specific figures.
In comments carried by Syrian state television on Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said his country would support efforts to combat the Islamic State on Syrian soil provided they were coordinated with the government of President Bashar al-Assad, Reuters reported.
