US women’s ice hockey team call off boycott over pay
Whale forward Dana Trivigno is part of the national team but wasn’t selected to play in this tournament. This deal could mean six figures for the players if they win Olympic gold. The players were expected to vote around noon ET on the agreement, although ratification was delayed over some issues with the language of the agreement, according to the person.
With the clock ticking, the organization’s executive board met throughout Monday to weigh its options, facing mounting political pressure and a vow from the national team players to boycott the year’s biggest tournament until a resolution is struck over pay and resources afforded to the women’s program. “I think this was uncomfortable for everybody”, he said.
A landmark deal doesn’t erase what happened.
The U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team has medaled in every Olympics since 1998, when Women’s Hockey was first added as an Olympic Sport. The Americans have reached the podium at each of the five Olympics at which women’s hockey was contested.
USA Hockey is based in Colorado Springs and is responsible for selecting and training teams for worldwide competition. “I hope we get a lot of credit for resolving this”.
“That was a reality from Day One”, Duggan said. We’re ready to move forward.
“The players’ demands would result in total player compensation in an Olympic year of approximately $210,000 per player if the team attains a silver medal and $237,000 for a gold medal”, the statement said.
Players also received business-class travel, just like the men’s team, and insurance protection they asked for. “We’re doing this more for them than for us”.
With the accord, fans and businesses – who have been looking forward to watching eight women’t teams from around the globe since that February 2016 press conference – can exhale and plan on watching the USA team that had been announced in early March.
They held firm, knowing this was their one shot to harness a groundswell of public support and the ideal timing that made USA Hockey vulnerable to stand up for what they felt was long overdue.
It took until nearly the last minute, but a deal did get done that includes the formation of a women’s high performance advisory group with current and former players – like Hockey Canada has had for some time. But the deal includes the formation of a new advisory group made up of current and former players that will “assist USA Hockey in efforts to advance girls’ and women’s hockey”, the release said. “I’m not anxious about that one bit”. Just try and see the big picture. The women have to share hotel rooms; the men don’t.
This boycott was a major risk for these athletes.
Also set to breathe again are USA Hockey officials who have felt increasing heat in the last week or so about the boycott. And they made a decision to boycott anyway.
“It’s historic, it’s new and different, and the players are happy”, said John B. Langel, the lead counsel at Ballard Spahr, which represented the players pro bono.
While they could play with replacement players, there were no indications that any were ed.
The very public fight these leaders (like Duggan and Hilary Knight) took on gave them more exposure than success in the upcoming World Championships alone would have ever given them. In particular, additional financial support in both Olympic and non-Olympic years would allow the players to train at the level necessary to compete for championships without wondering how to support themselves.
The 23 players of the US women’s national hockey team were slated to begin training camp Wednesday ahead of the IIHF Women’s World Championship. “We’re all standing together”.
