US Women’s National Team wins opener and Hope Solo booed
Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – Outspoken USA women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo shrugged off as “fun” the abuse she faced from Brazilian fans angered by extravagant social media posts showing her precautions to avoid the Zika virus at Rio 2016.
Solo, who was making her 200th appearance for the U.S.
Solo caused a stir in the country before coming to the Olympics by tweeting a photo of herself wearing a hat with mosquito netting, also posting a photo of dozens of packs of mosquito repellent she was packing for her trip to Brazil. Following a three-month absence due to wrist surgery in 2013, Solo didn’t give up a goal in her first four games back. Zika is a very frightening virus, and I’m sure when most athletes heard they had to play in Rio they felt the same way.
“I found a lot of success in the inches of the game”.
But Solo isn’t phased, she told NBC Sports, “It’s the Brazilians, they love soccer, they love football, it’s part of the culture so I expect it, but they’re having fun”.
The U.S. women’s national team showed again why they are the most watched team in the U.S.by dominating over New Zealand, and why they deserve equal pay. The boos first started during the team’s 2-0 tournament-opening win against New Zealand on Wednesday.
Even as she repelled shot after shot on Saturday, the chants continued, and were more noticeable than they were Wednesday. However, Solo maintains that she did her research first.
Despite the relentless chanting, Solo took the advice of the great prophet Swift and shook it off. She was two points from the win four times but could not close out Flipkens, who is ranked 62nd and only once reached the semifinals of a major tournament. “Get your own! #zikaproof #RoadToRio”.
The U.S. women, winners of last year’s World Cup and ranked No. 1 in the world, are vying for their fourth straight Olympic gold medal. So it’s not like I just made this up. “Regardless of what happens – regardless of the cheers, the chants, whatever – I know she’s focused on what she’s here to do”.
