US Women’s Track Cycling Team Claims Team Pursuit Silver Again
The GB women equalled the achievement of their male counterparts, who triumphed in the men’s pursuit 24 hours earlier.
The British team of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, and Joanna Rowsell-Shand set a world record of four minutes, 10.236 seconds over the 4,000-meter race.
It is Barker and Archibald’s first Olympic title, whilst Jo Rowsell-Shand and Laura Trott claim their second and third Olympic golds respectively, defending their pursuit title from four years ago in London.
The British have now won three-straight Olympic gold medals in the event.
The United States, the world champions, were a distant second.
The bronze medal ride-off will be between Canada and New Zealand after Australia, world record holders entering the Games, finished fifth fastest in the first round.
Britain have not won a world title in the discipline since 2005, but have now won gold at the 2008, 2012 and now 2016 Olympics.
Team GB had already set a new world record time in their qualifier to book their place in the final.
China also lowered the world record on the way to winning the women’s team sprint.
