USA election: New York Times endorses Hillary Clinton for president
The editorial praised Clinton’s character and discussed her numerous accomplishments throughout her “continuous” public service, including establishing a fund for health monitoring of 9/11 first responders as a NY senator, as well as leading efforts to renew diplomatic relations with Myanmar when she served as secretary of state. And Trump is considering a trip to Charlotte next week after Monday’s debate, two aides told CNN Thursday.
But Roberts said on CNN that she would prefer that the presidential candidates delay visits so security resources will not be stressed.
The shrunken version of the estate and gift tax that has been in place in recent years brings in relatively little money for the federal government, less than 1% of projected revenue over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. There would be an exemption of undetermined size that would focus the tax on high-income families, and Mrs. Clinton’s proposal, the campaign said, would include “careful protections and flexibility for small and closely held businesses, farms and homes, and personal property and family heirlooms”. Campaign officials were looking at the logistics involved in such a trip.
When considering their decision this year, the editorial board of the Enquirer said they didn’t take breaking their tradition of endorsing GOP candidates lightly. The last Republican the Times backed for the White House was President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956.
The endorsement wasn’t aimed at just affirming the ideas of Clinton supporters, either. “Our endorsement is rooted in respect for her intellect, experience, toughness and courage over a career of nearly continuous public service, often as the first or only woman in the arena”.
“Through war and recession, Americans born since 9/11 have had to grow up fast, and they deserve a grown-up president”. Rather, the Times said, the best case for voting for Clinton is to consider the challenges the United States face at home and overseas and what it called Clinton’s capacity to rise to them.
