USA Gymnastics says directors will resign in wake of sex abuse scandal
Nassar was sentenced to 40-175 years in prison Wednesday after more than 150 of his sexual abuse victims spoke out during a 7-day hearing. He is most famous for his work with the U.S. Gymnastics team, and has been accused of sexual assault by numerous most notable American Olympians in recent years. At least five of the 21 members already had resigned as a result of the scandal.
USA Gymnastics said in a statement it will comply with the USOC’s wishes. Nassar worked as a doctor with Olympic athletes and at Michigan State University.
Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis has stepped down Friday in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal.
USA Gymnastics previously reached a $1.25 million settlement and confidentiality agreement with gold medalist McKayla Maroney, who said Nassar sexually assaulted her.
Though Nassar is in prison, a fallout continues, with Michigan’s attorney general saying he will review what happened at Michigan State, and the NCAA saying it will look into whether the university violated any if its rules in the Nassar case.
Also on Friday, the US House Energy and Commerce Committee announced it would launch an investigation into sexual abuse in organised sports following Nassar’s case.
Authorities want to determine who knew of Nassar’s years-long abuse – and they will probe other allegations of harassment against USA Swimming and USA Taekwondo.
“This is bigger than Larry Nassar”, Raisman said.
Raisman added, “But my work and the army of survivors, we’re not done yet”.
A lawsuit Thursday sought to compel the state’s governor to investigate MSU’s Board of Regents, an elected group that oversees the public university. In a federal lawsuit victims allege neglect and other charges, describing multiple occasions in which they reported abuse as early as 1997.
Almost 160 of his victims have come forward with accusations against Nassar, who served the organization until 2016, saying that he assaulted them under the guise of medical treatment. That statement resonated with women not just in the courtroom but around the world. He outlined six reform steps the gymnastics governing body must take.
Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill are also demanding a Congressional investigation into the university and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

“I regret trusting them”, she said.
Students are also asking for the university to keep them informed when investigations are pending.
