Usain Bolt rolls; USA’s Keni Harrison sets 100 hurdles record
Bolt will once again compete in these three track and field events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as he looks to race off into the sunset with another three medals for his Olympic accolades.
It was Bolt’s first race since pulling out of the Jamaican Olympic trials for Rio earlier this month with a hamstring injury.
Incredibly, the 23-year-old American will not be going to Rio, after she could only finish in sixth at the USA trials two weeks ago.
After delivering a silky smooth performance to win, the clock initially showed a modest 12.58 seconds.
Brianna Rollins, Kristi Castlin and Nia Ali finished as the top three at trials, and will represent the U.S.at the Rio Olympics beginning on August 5.
Usain Bolt accused sprint rival Justin Gatlin of “disrespect” after the six-time Olympic champion won the 200m at the Anniversary Games in London.
Silas Kiplagat was the man who signed the famous book after winning the Emsley Carr Mile in 3.53.04. Rocking noticeably, he had to work all the way to the line for a time considerably shy of American LaShawn Merritt’s season-leading 19.74.
Britain’s Commonwealth silver medallist Adam Gemili was third in a season’s best 20.07.
“I think I’m pretty satisfied”.
“I knew this was the only way I was going to make myself feel better, to get back to training and go after that world record”, she said. “We want to be the best, just like the guys (who won gold in Athens) in 2004, it’s possible”.
Bolt began the evening waving to an adoring crowd from the back of a pick-up truck doing a circuit of the stadium, refurbished ready for the arrival of new tenants, West Ham.
The time ranks her second in the world this year, making her a real medal contender in Rio.
The action continues on Saturday, with the day’s highlight being the 5,000m, featuring home favourite Mo Farah.
While Kendra Harrison broke the world 100m hurdles record (read report here), Laura Muir came of age with a British record breaking performance – a feat also matched by the women’s 4x100m relay line-up.
Now the International Olympic Committee has to decide whether to go further than the IAAF’s decision and ban the entire Russian Federation team from the Rio de Janeiro.
Bolt pulled out of his national trials through injury, but was still chosen for the team to travel to Brazil.
She clocked 12.20, to beat a 28-year-old world record, while Jessica Ennis-Hill had to settle for eighth in 13.04s after clattering a hurdle. “And I wanted to come out here and do what I know what I could have done [in Rio]”. They can then be provisionally selected but must show their fitness later before the final list of competitors for the championship is submitted.
“Yes it definitely tells me I have passed this test”, Bolt told STAR Sports shortly after leaving the newly laid London Olympic Stadium track.
He was excited about his victory as he “was not feeling in shape because I’ve been ill the last few days” but he said “being able to adjust everything and be able to jump really high” was interesting as he prepares for the Rio games.
Later on, he admitted that he is still not at his peak and needs work to be done before the Rio Olympics, which starts in two weeks’ time.
“It wasn’t ideal. I came off the corner trying to hold my form”.
Bolt received a medical exemption to miss the Jamaican trials, which invited criticism from Gatlin and a host of other American sprinters who said the world’s fastest man had preferential treatment which he wouldn’t have received if he were an American.
