USC names Clay Helton as head football coach

USC’s offensive line has suffered some key injuries over the last few weeks, but the Trojans have had consistently elite recruiting to the point where, like Notre Dame, they can essentially be plug-and-play.

Helton, who is 43, became USC’s interim head coach for a second year in three seasons on October 12, when Steve Sarkisian took an indefinite leave of absence and was shortly thereafter dismissed because of off-field issues.

“We’ve got to be able to mix up defensive calls to throw them off-base too, ” Helton said. But it was so long ago that the Trojans have since fired their head coach and already hired his permanent successor. We’ve still got to win the Pac-12 South. We can still do that, and we can still win the championship.’ He made us stay on course, and we knew that the goal ahead of us was still reachable. Since then, Clay Helton has replaced the embattled Sarkisian and was named the program’s permanent head coach Monday.

Teams with 5-7 records will become eligible for at least two bowl bids, and as many as five, based on their Academic Progress Rates. “(Helton) came in there the next week and said, ‘I don’t know why you guys are tripping.

The move and the timing were surprising, but not a total shock.

According to Yahoo Sports, Chip Kelly, Philadelphia Eagles coach, reportedly met USC about the opening. Banner claimed he hasn’t decided whether to head for the National Football League next year.

But otherwise little else has leaked about USC’s search, though it was clear Helton was doing his best to make a case for himself.

Henry’s performance against the Tigers was notable for several single-game, season and career reasons. Trojans RB Justin Davis is coming off back-to-back 100-yard rushing games…. He has 149.8 per game on the ground this season after topping 200 yards for the third time in four games and the fourth time in sixth games overall.

“Sometimes the right choice is not always the easy choice”, he said.

The Trojans were the more physical team against UCLA, a program that has staked its identity on employing a rugged style since Mora’s arrival in 2012. They are efficient and explosive in the passing game.

What a final week for the Pac-12. USC could easily obtain the crown the media picked them to win prior to season’s beginning.

Heisman Trophy candidate Christian McCaffrey and David Shaw, the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football, earned top Pac-12 Conference honors on Tuesday. Garrett had 10 catches for 216 yards in the win, and he now leads the country with 1,451 yards receiving for the season.

“They’re both talented running backs”, Shaw said.

The leading rusher for the Trojans is a freshman, Ronald Jones II, who has amassed 890 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Cardinal, on the other hand, suffered their only conference loss in a 38-36 nailbiter against OR – the Ducks proceeded to bludgeon USC by twenty points the following week – and have outscored their conference opponents by an average of 18 points in the team’s eight Pac-12 wins.
