SAN FRANCISCO-The USC Trojans captured the Pac-12 South Division title as they defeated rival UCLA, 40-21, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s victory earned the Trojans the right to play Stanford next week for the conference title and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
Helton’s job still might turn out to be temporary, but it also isn’t finished. “I am so proud and a little bit lost for words”.
But while UCLA is one win away from a resilient finish to the season, the Trojans could write a feel-good finish to their troubles at home. USC enters the game following a convincing win over UCLA, while the Cardinal escaped against Notre Dame on a last-second field goal. “We made a decision, either Monday or Tuesday this week, that we weren’t losing this game”.
Paul Perkins would run in another touchdown in the 3rd quarter, but USC would answer with back-to-back scores on a sack fumble recovery for a touchdown, followed by a 20-yard TD pass from Cody Kessler to Darreus Rogers, giving the Trojans a 33-21 lead. His QB counterpart, UCLA freshman Josh Rosen, has been impressive with his efficiency all season long. He passed for just 214 yards against the Bruins last season, and he managed only 174 yards two years ago in his first appearance against the Trojans’ biggest rivals. USC’s Pete Carroll won seven consecutive games from 1999-2005, though the 2004 and 2005 victories were vacated by order of the NCAA.
Now the Trojans have a chance to play in Pasadena on New Year’s Day for the first time since the 2008 season.
Wood kicked another field goal to narrow the margin to 14-13 and then a breathtaking 42-yard punt return for a touchdown by sophomore Adoree’ Jackson gave USC the halftime lead at 20-13.
Stanford would go to the Rose Bowl, barring a surprise inclusion in the four-team playoff bracket. Sparty welcomes in the Penn State Nittany Lions to East Lansing this weekend for their final game of the regular season.
Duarte said, “It all hurts”. “Everything was on the line. No shots at them at all, I just feltwe didn’t execute like we could, or should have”. Colorado (4-9, 1-8) ends a season in which it was more competitive than in the past, but still struggled to win games.
The victory gives USC (8-4, 6-3 in conference play) the conference’s South Division championship for the first time. “They’re leaving their mark not only for now in the immediate moment, but for years to come”.
Rosen, a freshman, was involved in three turnovers, but he said the Trojans did “absolutely nothing” to throw him off. “There are a lot of plays I wish I had back”. Behind the gifted backfield tandem of Justin Davis and Ronald Jones, the Trojans have averaged almost 170 rushing yards per outing over their last seven games. The second runner up in the Pac-12 North, Oregon has become a team on a mission that no one should want to play.
“We’ve never faced a team that had this much athleticism”, Mora said. “Our game was kind of confused”.
“I know when the team’s down deep like that’s it going to be a quick punt”, Jackson said. “We’ve been playing very, very physical and our defense has been playing lights out”.
“I’ve had the great experience and fortune to be a part of this special place for six years”, Helton said.
