USMNT edge Canada 1-0
Jozy Altidore connected on an Ethan Finlay cross in the 89th minute for the only goal in a U.S. Men’s National Team 1-0 win against Canada in a friendly on Friday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Bingham was in the nets, Mix Diskerud teamed with Bradley in the middle, Jordan Morris was up front, and Steve Birnbaum, who came off the bench to play at center back (and scored the 90th-minute winner) Sunday, was at right back. United States’ Gyasi Zardes, left, and Canada’s Marcel De Jong try to head the ball during the first half of an exhibition soccer match Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, in Carson, Calif.
Michael Bradley then teed up a left-footed shot from distance in the 39th minute, but Froese was in the right spot and dealt with it nicely.
The US controlled the pace from the outset, but despite seven shots before halftime (three on goal), Canada’s press was effective in limiting the danger.
Altidore had a few more cracks at goal including a free kick that barely whistled past the post, but it looked like the game would end scoreless, however substitute Ethan Finley collected the ball on the left touchline and evaded a defender before firing a pacy cross than Altidore rose to meet and powerfully headed home to give the Yanks the victory. “I didn’t think we were sharp enough in front of the goal, myself included”.
“To finish the game and win the game, I thought we deserved to win”.
The US continued to push in the second half with marginal results. Altidore also hit the near post from the corner of the six-yard box with a rocket shot that Crepeau got a hand on. “And for me, this moment is a good day for us because the other goalkeepers are older ‘keepers, so we need a young boy like Crepeau”.
In the last scheduled match for the USA team before resuming World Cup qualifying at Guatemala on March 25, coach Jurgen Klinsmann chose a lineup of mostly veterans in front of Bingham. The Seattle Sounders’ new signing couldn’t find the goal.
Orlando City striker Cyle Larin was subbed off in the 77 minute without having scored or really getting any good chances, but he was isolated up top for Canada and his teammates largely bunkered behind him and played much of the game in their own half.
