USOC optimistic Los Angeles will bid for 2024 Olympics

Instead, he is focused on the success of the current Parapan Am Games, and said any further discussion about a possible Olympic bid would take place after the close of these Games.

The 2024 Olympic host city will be selected by the IOC on September 15, 2017 in Lima, Peru. The group began talks earlier this month with USOC officials, Garcetti senior adviser Jeff Millman said.

The Mayor’s Office says that there will be a $400 million contingency fund, paid for by Olympics revenues, with $200 million of that to repay the city’s costs of policing and managing the Games. Los Angeles sought to be the U.S. candidate to host the 2016 Games but was beaten by Chicago, whose bid was ultimately rejected by the worldwide Olympic Committee in favor of Rio de Janeiro.

The USOC board of directors also discussed Wednesday replacing Boston with San Francisco or Washington, D.C., which along with Los Angeles were the other finalists to be the 2024 U.S. Olympic bid city. And the event could cost as much as $6.9 billion, according to the city’s feasibility report from January of 2014. Those numbers, of course, are only estimates, and have, for decades, consistently run over.

The centerpiece of an L.A. Olympics would be the Memorial Coliseum, which was also used in the city’s last two Olympics – in 1932 and 1984.

Los Angeles is looking to join London as the only cities to host the Summer Olympics three times.

“The USOC and Los Angeles think that this is our time and we want to work together with a strong partnership to make it happen”, USOC chairman Larry Probst said in a teleconference.

“One of the reasons LA is seen so strongly by so many IOC (International Olympic Committee) members is we’re not building a transit system because of the Olympics“. “It left a great legacy for the city”. That became a major sticking point as the Boston bid disintegrated.

If Los Angeles is chosen as America’s bidder, it could be up against potential foreign bidders such as Rome; Nairobi, Kenya; Casablanca, Morocco; Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa; Doha, Qatar; Melbourne, Australia; Paris; Hamburg, Germany; and St. Petersburg, Russia. The victor will be decided in 2017.

The IOC has made it clear it expects the U.S.to bid for the 2024 Games and at recent meetings in Kuala Lumpur did not hide its disappointment over the Boston fiasco.
