Utah police arrest man suspected in deaths of baby, 2 others
Salt Lake City police have arrested a man suspected in the killings of two adults and a 2-month old child Friday.
They then made the discovery of 50-year-old Heike Poike, her 2-month-old granddaughter, Lyrik and Dakota Smith, 28, all shot, inside the home. Authorities say Tran lived in the basement and let the victims live upstairs on the main floor. Police booked Tran into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of three counts of aggravated murder.
Police said they were trying to find the family of an 8-year-old boy who hadn’t been at school in recent days and discovered the killings.
Police went to the home looking for relatives of an 8-year-old boy whose family failed to pick him up from school on Friday.
Alexander Hung Tran, 32, was arrested Saturday by Salt Lake City police for the fatal shooting of three people including a 2-month-old girl, according to FOX News.
A motive in the killings was not released.
According to jail documents, Tran said he was responsible for the deaths.
Heike Poike was the 8-year-old boy’s grandmother, and the baby was his sister.
Chipping didn’t have details about the boy’s parents or other family members but said the boy was with relatives.
Officers went inside, found Tran with a gun, and took him into custody without encountering resistance.
Chipping said Tran lived in the basement apartment of the boy’s home and was found inside with a firearm.
Chipping said a medical examiner is going to perform an autopsy and that they would glean any information to determine the identity of the male.
Several dozen gathered for the candlelight vigil Saturday night. “If you needed someone to talk to, she was there”, she said. When officers looked through windows, they identified a body underneath a tarp.
“Nobody deserves to die like this”, she said. One neighbor said Tran drove a auto into his mailbox three weeks ago.
