Uwe Rosler thanks Leeds fans after Everton win
After second half goals from Alex Mowatt and new signing Chris Wood, Leeds look confident of hitting the ground running when it comes round to the first game of the season, at home to Burnley next Saturday.
Everton’s line-up was relatively inexperienced, in part because the club will host a testimonial for Duncan Ferguson against Villarreal tomorrow. “Everton struggled to deal with our shape”.
United employed Rosler’s tactics from the outset, pressing Everton high up the field and looking for opportunities to counter.
McCarthy was replaced by Tom Cleverley in the Everton midfield at half-time, with the former Manchester United player’s name roundly booed by Leeds supporters. He is seen as deadwood by Dick Advocaat who is eager to move players out in order to create his own squad. His cut-back ran beyond an unmarked Arouna Kone and Kieran Dowell’s effort deflected wide.
Wood had earlier had a goal ruled out for offside, but he made sure there was no doubt with this dipping strike over goalkeeper Joel Robles in the 70th minute.
Leeds have already strengthened in Ajose’s position by signing New Zealand worldwide striker Chris Wood from Leicester City at the start of last month and he will jostle with the likes of Mirko Antenucci, Souleymane Doukara and Steve Morison for a place in Rosler’s starting XI.
