Vaccine for Zika virus may be years away, say U.S. health experts

Four Canadians have been infected with the Zika virus after traveling to affected countries, according to Canadian government health officials. She is the fourth confirmed case of the disease in Canada.

In a statement, the commission warned of the risk of imported Zika cases, even though no case has been reported in China.

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites.

With 20,000 people confirmed as having the virus, Colombia is now the second most infected country in the world after Brazil.

The institute said 37.2 percent of pregnant women with Zika live in Norte de Santander Province, along the eastern border with Venezuela.

Symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis can last from several days to weeks and there is no vaccine to prevent or treat an infection.

The mosquito-transmitted virus has been linked to brain damage in thousands of babies in Brazil. Travelers showing symptoms are still being urged to seek testing for tracking purposes, but there have been no fatalities from the Zika virus recorded in the United States. There is no vaccine for the Zika virus.

But doctors say they are still learning about the virus and its impact on mothers and unborn children. There is now no cure for Zika virus.

Nigeria’s minister of health Isaac Adewole said the travel restriction, especially on pregnant women, will be on until the situation improves worldwide. In India, we have to double mosquito control measures since our tropical weather leads to the prevalence of the Aedes mosquito and the immunity levels of much of the population are low.
