Valencia: Nuno Espirito Santo resigns as coach at Spanish club
Phil Neville won’t have been many people’s tip for the next member of Man United’s Class of 92 to take a managerial role.
Nuno Espirito Santo said he is upset to leave Valencia, but he has urged fans to support the youthful Spanish outfit as they attempt to compete with Europe’s elite.
Following Valencia’s 1-0 loss ot Sevilla-a match where los Che’s goal attempts were outnumbered by their red cards (0-2), coach Nuno Espirito Santo announced he was leaving the club, saying he had spoken to owner Peter Lim both before and after the match.
Captain Dani Parejo said after Nuno’s remarks: “We’ve got training tomorrow – but we don’t know with who”.
Last season, he took charge of a Salford City game alongside Paul Scholes following the departure of the non-league club’s manager.
A formal statement is expected later on Monday after a meeting between Nuno and club directors, but Neville and Voro led training on Monday morning, the club said on Twitter.
Nuno, a former goalkeeper and previously in charge of Rio Ave, replaced Juan Antonio Pizzi in the summer of 2014 and guided Valencia to Champions League qualification via fourth place in La Liga at the first time of asking.
“I understand that the issue is pertinent, but I do not want to say too much in this regard. I want to thank all the players I have worked with, Peter Lim and the fans”. It is important that the Valencianismo continues to be united and believes in this project for the present and the future.
After 13 La Liga games, Valencia have picked up 19 points. “And an owner I felt I could trust”.
