Valley City School Wins National Award
Each of those programs, Harrison said, helped raise overall student performance and close the achievement gap among low-income and minority students – two measures the U.S. Department of Education uses to designate schools as Blue Ribbon.
Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years. “Washington Elementary’s recognition as a Blue Ribbon School is a testament to the hard work of the students, teachers, administrators and parents in creating an open and productive institution of learning”. “You represent excellence-in vision, in implementation and in results-and we want to learn as much as we can from you”.
“This is really the highest honor a school can receive, especially on the federal level”, said Greg Carenza, principal at Webster Elementary.
A complete list of National Blue Ribbon Schools can be found here. The schools then participated in a rigorous application process with the U.S. Department of Education.
Margaret Leary School was nominated in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category.
During the 2013-14 school year, Rogich posted student proficiency rates in math, reading and science between 17 percentage points and 33 percentage points higher than the state average.
Whispering Oak Elementary School in Winter Garden and Legacy Charter High School in Ocoee are the two local winners.
Hilltop Elementary School in Beachwood and Westerly Elementary School in Bay Village have won coveted National Blue Ribbons from the U.S. Department of Education.
