Valtteri Bottas wins his first Formula One Grand Prix
London:Formula One frontrunner Sebastian Vettel stunned Mercedes to take Ferrari’s first pole position since 2015 on Saturday with team mate Kimi Raikkonen completing a front row lockout at the Russian Grand Prix.
Kimi Raikkonen says he was happy to see his fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas score his first F1 victory in Russian Federation, even if the result meant a defeat for Ferrari.
“It is not important to think about the championship because right now I need to understand where the speed was this weekend, where I went wrong with the set-up, and then come back fighting for the next race”.
Massa was quick to congratulate Bottas after the race, the pair having spent three years together as teammates at Williams ahead of the latter’s move up to Mercedes for 2017.
“I immediately opened the radio ‘tell me about the others, tell me about the others!'”, he said.
“First win and hopefully first of many.it’s a good feeling”.
“I wasn’t able to stay in the battle”. But it’s nice to get confirmation that the results are possible.
Mercedes have now won every grand prix hosted in Sochi since the Russian race started in 2014. Bottas concedes that the first win has take a while, but he is now looking forward to more as he has learnt the trick.
“But now it’s done, I just want to do it again and again. It’s not going to that simple this year, it’s going to be a massive fight”.
“How did we manage to find ourselves behind him when we stopped before?”
A furious Eric Boullier insisted that it is not acceptable for a team of McLaren’s might to see another of their cars absent from the start of the race.
“With the backing off for the temperature, it was losing seven tenths, maybe a second a lap”. “Bottas beat him and maybe the next three times Lewis will do that”. We know it is very hard to keep the tires in the right window and it’s something we need to work on because the Ferrari seems to struggle less – the window is probably larger.
His problems were exacerbated by Bottas, who had tuned in his vehicle over the weekend to perfection.
“I tried everything to catch Valtteri”, Vettel said.
Hamilton and Rosberg were close during their karting years and time in junior single-seaters, but a number of on-track clashes meant that relationship became more intense while at Mercedes.
“The relationship between the two of them is very much intact”, Wolff said, as quoted by ESPN.
