Van Gaal blames traffic for fans’ early Old Trafford exit
Thousands of fans had left their seats before Wayne Rooney converted a penalty deep into injury time of United’s boring 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup.
Louis van Gaal said a bid to beat the traffic was one of the reasons why fans left Old Trafford early during Saturday’s FA Cup tie.
“There are also matches where I’m very bored or angry because we are not disorganising our opponent’s defence, but that is football”, he explained.
“Do you know that”, he snapped at reporters. “But we are in the next round”.
Scholes, in his role as pundit on BT sport, has commented that Manchester United fans, and players, look bored playing under the Dutchman.
Despite the hosts’ insipid display, Van Gaal was simply happy with his players for securing a place in the next round.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal walks off dejected after the game against Norwich City at Old Trafford on December 19, 2015.
Van Gaal understood why the Stretford End rose and ironically applauded Memphis’s effort after over an hour of failure to register a shot. “I think that’s the way he likes to play football”.
Scholes added: “I’ve tried to defend this team over recent weeks, but it’s getting more and more hard to do”.
“Ok, I saw their game against Arsenal and they played very well”.
But he defended his philosophy and said: “I’m not Sir Alex [Ferguson], as you know”.
Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger injured his knee and is a doubt for tomorrow’s Premier League match at Newcastle United.
“The players were also frustrated, like the fans”.
“We have to do it [create chances] better than this match of course”, said the United boss.
“But it is not so easy to purchase players who are better than Mata because even though he is in a different profile, he is a very good right winger in our way of playing”.
“You want that?” asked Van Gaal to a room full of nodding heads.
The former Bayern Munich manager is never willing to give an inch no matter how poorly his team played, or what woeful football his players are producing every week for the club since the start of the season.
