Van Gaal eyes title after another double over Liverpool
A tame encounter between North-West rivals Liverpool and Manchester United ended in a 1-0 win for the visiting side United, at Anfield on Sunday (Monday AEDT).
“Maybe we had better opportunities to score, they played very well, very physical and were very direct, which is an unusual style for them”, Wenger told news men after the game.
The 30-year-old lifelong Evertonian relishes winning at Anfield, and his delight was plain to see after he hammered home his first goal at Anfield since January 2005.
“We have to continue, which is not so easy”.
“We scored three the other night against Arsenal and we are creating chances but we just couldn’t finish them off against United for whatever reason”, the midfielder added.
In his post-match press conference, the United manager said; “We have a lot of matches to go”.
A share of the spoils at the Britannia Stadium saw Arsenal return to the summit on goal difference ahead of surprise title contender Leicester City, with both clubs now boasting 44 points from 22 league matches played so far this season. Liverpool-born Rooney, who began his career at Everton, said he was going to relish the thought of scoring at Anfield, something he had not done for more than decade.
But, with the England and United skipper back among the goals, Smalling feels Van Gaal’s decision to bench his star forward has paid dividends.
“A lot of the things we did today were really good”, Klopp said, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“I think [being left out] can refresh you and spur you on a bit more to prove to everyone just how good you are”.
“This game shall give a big boost to the players, the fans and everyone in the environment of Manchester United”.
“That’s the only possibility to be satisfied after the game”. We create two chances and scored one of them.
He was also delighted with Rooney’s victor. It was a good result for a side that is working hard to stay in the race for Champions League qualification.
“I don’t think (United goalkeeper) David de Gea has done very much – two or three balls he has to stop, and a goalkeeper has to do that”.
“The set-piece, we didn’t defend it well, we reorganised before it”. We can overcome that, so that’s what I’m thinking about. The United captain volleyed in a Marouane Fellaini rebound in the 78th minute to send fans all around the world into delirium.
