Van Gaal sees room for improvement after United’s win
Louis van Gaal praises Chis Smalling’s “outstanding” goal that gave Manchester United three points against Wolfsburg in the Champions League.
Manchester United made life hard for themselves by dropping off and inviting pressure in the closing minutes of their 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg in the Champions League yesterday, defender Chris Smalling has said.
Although United started the match on the wrong foot when a few sloppy defending allowed Daniel Caligiuri to put Woflsburg ahead, fine performances from Anthony Martial, Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Bastian Schweinsteiger allowed the hosts take control.
Van Gaal meanwhile, has said he is a different type of manager compared to Wenger and his Old Trafford predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson.
Carrick missed the 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Wednesday night due to a minor knock but has now been declared available for selection. In the second half United scored a very lucky goal, while we were on top for the last 25 minutes but could not convert the chances we created.
He added: “Okay, we score at once but after that it was suffering”.
“Nevertheless, they haven’t won so much, so you have to look for that improvement with that team”.
The Red Devils will now face Arsenal and Everton in the next two weeks before playing CSKA Moscow in their next Champions League encounter. “I think it’s very important for me also to play in a competition like this”. We created so many chances – but then you don’t finish them, and that is unlucky.
Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin feels Manchester United are starting to silence the doubters who complained about their style of play earlier this season. Also, I saw that at that side they could be more effective on that side.
“That will benefit them but we shall manage it”, declared Van Gaal.
Van Gaal insists, however, that Young has become a crucial figure in his squad, despite his ongoing failure to impress Hodgson.
“I think we can do more to support teams in Europe”.
