Van Gaal tells Manchester United to prove their worth against Wolfsburg
Guillermo Varela made his debut in the 0-0 draw against West Ham on Saturday but could be thrown into the starting XI on Tuesday.
Furthermore they only need draw to qualify and with players such as Luis Gustavo they should be able to do enough.
Schweinsteiger was on a podium with Van Gaal on Monday, spreading the same belief that the goals will soon start to arrive. “I want to win titles and I think United is also used to winning titles, so that is definitely my goal”.
“When you are a big striker like (Cristiano) Ronaldo, (Lionel) Messi and Thomas Muller, they are all the same”. They want to score goals. We have won one and lost two, and my big friend [Bastian Schweinsteiger] was there [for Bayern Munich against Inter Milan in 2010].
“When you don’t finish from a metre in front of an empty goal, you can not say anything more”. We shall try to win, of course. “We played very well especially in the second half – but you have to finish”.
“I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come”.
“But I’m convinced he should continue (in the team) and he will score at the right moment again”.
That killer instinct must return by the time United take to the field in Wolfsburg on Tuesday night otherwise they are likely to exit the Champions League. “Hopefully we will get there”.
They average only 7.4 shots per game under Van Gaal compared to 15.3 less than five years ago at Old Trafford.
During the current campaign, the former Barcelona boss has been criticised by fans for a style of play which has seen them score just 20 goals in 15 Premier League matches.
“The most important thing is that we are creating and we are dominant”.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, who faces a possible FA charge over a clash with West Ham’s Winston Reid, was prevented from answeing a question about the incident.
“There was a fantastic team spirit and we were dominant”. You have to score. “That is our problem in the latest matches”. “That is important – not only his football qualities – but that he can lead and guide a team on the pitch”, Van Gaal said, quoted by the club website (www.manutd.com).
Manchester United need to beat Wolfsburg away from home to secure their route through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
“That’s why it is very important to beat Wolfsburg”, said the Dutchman, “we can not depend on the result of PSV”.
