Van Gaal: The goals will come for United
The Red Devils registered their fifth 0-0 draw in just eight games on Saturday, and Van Gaal admitted that the club are yet to see the best of Schweinsteiger, per the Manchester Evening News.
United had already qualified for the knockout stages by the time they arrived at Wolfsburg in 2009, but despite fielding an under-strength side that included Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak, they came away with a comfortable win thanks to Michael Owen’s hat-trick.
“You need to score, otherwise you can not win, and it is very frustrating, also for the players because they want to score”.
Guillermo Varela has travelled with the squad but it would be a big risk to give him his full debut in such an important game.
“You never know that for sure but I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come”, insisted Van Gaal. “We created a lot of chances but to score you need not only composure but a lot of luck”. “When I have to consider our season then I can only say that the match against Arsenal and against Palace we were not the better team”.
“I think he is very talented”, Van Gaal, who forged his reputation as a manager in Holland with a brilliant young side at Ajax, said.
The 0-0 home stalemate against PSV a fortnight ago cost them the opportunity to qualify with a match to spare and ensure this trip to Wolfsburg was a dead rubber like in 2008.
This game will have big implications on the manager as well since getting eliminated in the group stages will be unacceptable for the board and this may result in Van Gaal having big some problems.
“(The booing fans) don’t like the style of play from Manchester United, but everyone knows in advance that all the teams of Louis van Gaal is playing like that”, he added.
Although they had the greater amount of possession, the West Ham goalkeeper had to make just one save, certainly not good for a team that has to do better than a draw against the Bundesliga outfit.
A win would secure first place in the group for Wolfsburg. The Germany global caught West Ham’s Winston Reid with a forearm during Saturday’s game against West Ham at Old Trafford and the FA has deemed it would have been a red card offence if the referee, Mark Clattenburg, had seen the incident.
Dominance in games without wins can only take you so far but no matter how much United fans voice their discontent, van Gaal won’t change his methods but will it be worth it at the end of the season?
“The guy who has the opportunity, they have to feel they want to score a goal and are going to score”, he said.
