Van Gaal thinks Leicester could win Premier League title
United visit Premier League leaders Leicester on Saturday, and Van Gaal suggested the Foxes could be genuine title challengers.
Van Gaal’s side is building from a solid base with 14 clean sheets in their last 22 games but van Gaal admits he wants to keep the supporters entertained.
Manchester United failed to seal their place in the last 16 of the Champions League when they were held to a 0-0 draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford early this morning, leaving Group B wide open before the final round of matches next month.
Van Gaal’s conservative approach has been a source of frustration for many United fans this season, but the former Barcelona boss is happy with how the team are performing and is confident goals will return to his side.
“But also you have to see how our opponents are playing against us, and when you see how they play, you know the difficulty of organising against that type of opponent”.
Although both teams had their chances, overall it was a frustrating night at Old Trafford, where fans paid tribute to United great George Best who died exactly 10 years ago to the day aged 59.
“I think maybe he’s set up his team to be very good defensively because he thinks, maybe, he hasn’t got the quality up front”.
A win against the German side would see United finish top of the group but if PSV win at home to bottom side CSKA Moscow, a defeat or draw for United in Wolfsburg would see them drop out of the competition and into the Europa League.
“He was last season a very nasty player for us, ” the United manager said. He scored and provoked a penalty and now he is scoring 10 games in a row.
“Given that the Man United hierarchy looked beyond the man’s CV, they knew they were getting a manager who played a precise, possession-based game”.
“Normally this kind of club can be a long time competing but normally at the end it is more hard”, he said.
Dutchman Van Gaal, 64, responded by questioning whether Scholes’ criticism would benefit the Premier League club, adding that he did not agree with his opinion.
“It’s just incredible how they are still in with a shout of qualifying and flying high in the Premier League”.
