Vandals in North Texas deface Confederate monument with the words ‘This is Racist’
– A Confederate monument in downtown Raleigh was covered with a trash bag and police tape early Tuesday after authorities say it was vandalized.
The Denton County sheriff’s office was investigating after the county judge’s office reported the vandalism Monday morning.
Those responsible for defacing the federally-protected monument with the graffiti could face serious consequences.
“Due to the age of the original land deed, the Cornelius Police Department is working with someone familiar with the history of the monument and the land it stands on, in an attempt to locate someone that is authorized to make decisions on behalf of the ‘Monument Association, ‘” Shores said.
County Commissioner Hugh Coleman said there has been increased security placed on the statue and Denton Square in recent weeks, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle. “But you never know… that’s why there are cameras”.
A plaque on the site notes that the monument is “intended as a memorial to Denton County citizens who sacrificed themselves for the community”, according to NBCDFW.
While the memorial is now maintained by Denton County, the final say on whether the statute stays or goes comes from the Texas Historical Commission.
Jonathon Vann, a co-founder of Dentonites Against Racist Traditions, swiftly denied any involvement by members of the group.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Another Confederate monument has been vandalized in North Carolina. The tall stone arch was erected in 1918 to commemorate the Southern soldiers who died fighting during the Civil War. “I am just hoping it’s reversible”, Riddle said.
The group formed after a June 17 mass shooting in South Carolina touched off a national campaign to remove Confederate flags from prominent public displays. In the wake of the lowering of the Confederate battle flag at the South Carolina state Capitol, Denton residents called for the removal of the monument.
