Vanuatu wins 46-0 in Pacific Games football tournament
With the brutal punishment inflicted on them by Fiji, Micronesia handily beat the long-standing club soccer record of Arbroath 36-0 Bon Accord, set in 1885. And lost 38-0.
Stay tuned, as Vanuatu takes on Micronesia on Tuesday – and needs 37 goals to put them in a position to advance and/or to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. The Melanesians needed to win big in order to have any hope of joining Tahiti in the semi-finals, and they didn’t muck around. That was preceded by a 38-0 loss to Fiji and a 30-0 defeat to Tahiti – 114 goals in three matches.
The 46-0 scoreline is not a world record for full worldwide matches however, as the Pacific Games is an U-23 tournament. Could have another new record only days apart. A similar situation was at play here, with Foster also telling the Guardian that most of the players are still new to the game. We didn’t have high expectations. He added: “They’re boys, not men… and they’ve been playing against well-seasoned men”.
Sivoki was sent off in the second-half and coach Carlos Buzzetti strongly believes on the importance of maintaining composure.
Vanuatu’s leading goalscorer against FSM, Jean Kultack.
“Most people thought we would be a mile away but I think we were the better team and we should have won today”.
“These players are pioneers”.
There are 24 mostly Pacific Island countries competing.
Journalist Kevin Darling, covering the games in PNG, told Sky Sports: “The problem is it’s not a squad of footballers, it’s just a squad of normal blokes”.
If it’s any consolation, American Samoa’s 31-0 defeat to Australia remains the official world record, as Micronesia are not affiliated to Federation Internationale de Football Association.
