Vardy equals Premier League goal scoring record
Striker Vardy goes into a top-of-the-table clash with Manchester United next weekend looking to eclipse a record he now jointly holds with former Reds favourite Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
City conceded three goals in the opening 32 minutes and lost 4-1 at home to Liverpool and Arsenal lost 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with Santi Cazorla missing a late penalty to tie the game.
It was his 13th goal of the season, though van Nistelrooy, who was magnanimous enough to send his record-seeking successor a good-luck message before the game, will no doubt point out that 15 goals arrived during his ideal 10 games.
Manchester United made it eight games unbeaten in all competitions with a 2-1 win away to Watford in Saturday’s early kick-off – the first Premier League match since the Paris terror attacks of November 13 which killed 130 people.
“It’s important for us because it’s important we have 28 points, 12 (more) and we achieve our goal”.
His scoring run began against Bournemouth on Aug 29 and, if he finds the net against United on Saturday, he will equal Stan Mortensen’s top-flight record of scoring in 11 successive matches, which he set playing for Blackpool in 1950-51.
He added: “They are a well-drilled unit, played as a team and you don’t get to the top of the league unless you are that”.
City’s Argentina striker Sergio Aguero, returning from injury, pulled one back brilliantly just before halftime but Martin Skrtel sealed Liverpool’s emphatic triumph with a thunderous 81st minute strike.
“Then there’s the cryotherapy chamber, which is absolutely freezing, but it helps you in your recovery, so fair play to the club for getting that in”.
“And all we can do is lick our wounds and work hard and make sure we’re better next week”.
“We talked about it a little bit yesterday – the last five or six games, the level of performance, we’ve seen progression”.
“I am a key player to this team, and I must do way better than I did”.
‘Must have been very disappointed with the defending on the last two goals?’ I’m not sure he would be, maybe he would, I don’t think how Leicester structure things.
“Obviously, the cryo chamber that we’ve got at the training ground’s come in use”.
Their manager Louis van Gaal took heart from their overall performance and the fact they went top even though it was only to be for a short time.
Aston Villa slumped to a heavy first defeat under Remi Garde in his second game in charge as braces from Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku condemned the basement boys to a 4-0 thrashing at Everton.
