Vehicle crash causes massive gas line explosion near Detroit
Residents whose homes were evacuated in the hours following the explosion were offered shelter at Inter-City Baptist Church on Allen Road. “It was just a big boom”.
The motorists was injured in the crash and a detective reportedly went to the hospital to conduct an interview. “It sounded like a locomotive for about 20 minutes”.
No injuries were reported at the site of the explosion and Hays said the drivers life was saved by his friend. “He was burned and appeared to be going into shock”.
Martinez said the evacuation in Melvindale, a town of about 10,000 inhabitants outside Detroit, was lifted at around 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT).
We’re learning that several homes are on fire as a result of the explosion.
In a statement from shortly after 6 a.m., DTE Energy said that authorities had extinguished a fire at its training facility in Melvindale.
Allen Road was damaged by the intense heat. “I’ve been here 25 years and no one has ever travelled that path”.
“The good thing is that DTE works with police and fire representatives on a regular basis to prepare for incidents like this”, Simons said.
