Veteran receiver Anquan Boldin joining Lions via free agency
Boldin tweeted that he’s excited to reunite with Detroit coach Jim Caldwell, and he hopes he can help the Lions reach the postseason.
The Detroit Lions have reportedly signed the veteran wide receiver to a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Well, it appears that Boldin is now finally taking himself off of the free agent market.
Boldin played last season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he was still able to put up productive numbers, despite the team’s offensive struggles.
Last year, he led the team in catches (69), receiving yards (789) and receiving touchdowns (4 – tied). Boldin had spent his previous 13 National Football League seasons (2003-15) with the Arizona Cardinals, the Baltimore Ravens, and the San Francisco 49ers.
With a number of passing targets already at Matthew Stafford’s disposal, Boldin’s biggest impact could come off the field.
Now with Detroit, Boldin can make the case to being a starting wide receiver.
The retirement of Calvin Johnson opens up the number 81 jersey – the only number Boldin has ever worn in the NFL. Instead, they signed Marvin Jones, Andre Caldwell, Andre Roberts, and Jeremy Kerley in free agency. That the Eagles showed interested in an immediate starter like Boldin, who turns 36 this season, could show they’re desperate for help at the position.
Detroit will begin its 2016 season at Indianapolis on September 11, and then host the Titans the following week for their home opener.
