Victor: New middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez: It’s my era now after
“Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez”.
The fight generated a lot of buzz and was promoted as the opposite of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao bout that seemed to turn off fans. Yahoo Sports says, “Cotto actually out-threw Alvarez, 629-484, but that was largely due to an inordinate amount of jabs”. Cotto hid behind a flinging jab and an occasional right hand, left hook combination.
“From the first round, I felt superior in punch, and I also felt that pressure to win”, Alvarez said.
Cotto, however, was shocked by the decision.
“Our plan was to outbox him, our plan was to outjab him”, Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach said.
“I really think Canelo’s improved”, Roach said. He fought well and smart for the most part, but being 10 years older than Alvarez might have tipped the scales to the younger fighter. “There is no way”.
Canelo Alvarez Fight Coming To Movie Theaters was a top story.
The Mexican sensation comes into this one looking to add another big win to his resume with a record of 45-1-1 in his career with 32 knockouts. Alvarez later said “I’m not afraid of any fighter”, according the Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times. Let’s do it!’ ” De La Hoya said. It’s also a fight Alvarez needs badly if he is to become the superstar De La Hoya believes he will be and be a part of big fights in May and September next year. I strongly feel that we’re hitting the million mark.
And of course it will rain, absolutely.
Alvarez opened up a little more in round three. Golovkin is 34-0 with 31 knockouts and has 21 knockouts in succession. Alvarez matched Cotto with similar shots but with additional potency. “GGG is a great fighter, and he is my friend”. We’ll see. But, is he gonna fight Golovkin? Both fighters connected with hard blows to the head. “Miguel’s defense was unbelievable all night long”. Alvarez and his handlers, meanwhile, appear to be willing to make a fight with Golovkin, although not necessarily right away. I thought we had the edge at the end but it went the other way. “He wants to fight”.
Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing had Alvarez winning by a 116-112 tally.
It’s probably just as well, because the fight was barely a middleweight bout anyway.
Alvarez didn’t have to extend himself too much to defeat Cotto, who at 35 gave up 10 years to the red-headed Mexican.
On the undercard, Francisco Vargas stormed back and came off the canvas to win the WBC super-featherweight title from Takashi Miura, via ninth-round technical knock-out. The fresher legs were at an advantage in the later rounds. A cut above the left eye of Cotto in the final round was proof of battle.
Golovkin, watching from ringside, grinned broadly as it ended. He knew that his dreams will soon come true.
The business of boxing is notoriously odd and the unexpected should always be expected.
That’s all good news for HBO, which will be running the PPV of tonight’s fight, and the more fans are talking about the main event the better for them, and arguably for boxing. “I don’t have to do what he wants”. Now we get to see what’s next [for Canelo].
