Video and Photos: New Main Stand roof truss dominates Anfield skyline
A general view of Anfield Stadium, Liverpool as the 650 tonne roof truss is lifted into place on the new main stand, Friday July 24, 2015.
Work has begun to erect a 650-tonne roof truss over Anfield’s new main stand as the revelopment prepares to reach a major milestone.
The limit for work to safely go ahead was 9 metres per second but with gusts being recorded at 11mps, bosses called off their plans just after 9am – knowing that they would need a full day of work to complete the procedure.
Lifting the truss is a landmark moment in the ongoing expansion of the Reds’ home, which is due to be completed by the start of the 2016-17 season.
“This is a historic milestone in Anfield’s history as the stadium transformation continues to take shape”, said Ian Ayre, chief executive officer of Liverpool FC, in a report by the UK-based Construction Enquirer.
The first stage of the stadium expansion will add around 8,500 seats, taking the three-tier Main Stand capacity to more than 20,000 and increasing the overall capacity of Anfield to around 54,000.
Once completed, the Main Stand will be one of the largest all-seater single stands in Europe’s top divisions.
With the 20m-high truss now in place, work can get underway on constructing the Main Stand’s new roof, Carillion said.
Anfield’s redevelopment has been progressing since the end of the football season.
