Video of Charlotte shooting victim, Keith Scott emerges
Vastly different stories have emerged from police and Scott’s family and neighbors about the confrontation.
She states the address and says: “These are the police officers that shot my husband”.
Moments earlier, when police converged on a white vehicle in a parking lot of an apartment complex, Scott’s wife says: “Don’t shoot him!” The video does not show the shooting itself, because of the vantage point from which it was filmed.
Bamberg said that he hoped the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department would release their own videos of the shooting, something protestors, activists, community leaders and the media have been requesting since the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon.
The first night near the scene of the shooting and Wednesday and Thursday night protests in uptown Charlotte.
Releasing it without “context” could only inflame the situation, he added.
Police have said Scott refused repeated commands to drop a gun, while residents say he was unarmed.
Mayor Jennifer Roberts also said Friday that she believes the video should be released publicly.
“I’m telling you right now, if you think I say we should display a victim’s worst day for consumption, that is not the transparency I’m speaking of”, said Putney.
Law enforcement officials have shown the family two recordings-one by a dashboard camera, another by a body camera.
But peaceful protests turned violent, with North Carolina’s governor declaring a state of emergency in Charlotte.
Rayquan Borum has been charged in the shooting death of Justin Carr, 26, who was on life support and died Thursday after being shot in the head. A suspect was arrested, but police provided few details. Police later said that a gun was found nearby. Based on a transcript of the video made by the NY Times, police order Scott to “drop the gun” 11 separate times over about 45 seconds before shots are fired. Neighbors have said he was holding only a book.
“We’re here to seek the truth, so we’re investigating that to find the truth, the absolute truth as best as the evidence can show us”, Putney said.
There is also a police video of the man’s killing by police.
Justin Bamberg, an attorney for Scott’s family, said it’s “impossible to discern” from the videos what, if anything, Scott is holding in his hands. “When he was shot and killed, Mr. Scott’s hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards”.
“She will plan to visit Charlotte next Sunday, provided circumstances allow”.
