Video part of review of fatal Louisiana police shooting
NOPD Communications Director Tyler Gamble said body-worn cameras and in-car cameras from NOPD officers show the final shootout, as well as video from a state police trooper’s dash camera.
“This is a little over the top”, she said.
State police made a traffic stop at Law St. and New Orleans St. around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Albert Girard, who said he was in the area visiting friends, told the Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans that he saw police exchange gunfire with two men. He is expected to recover after being shot in the elbow, Louisiana State Police Col. Michael Edmonson said at a press conference.
A second trooper tracked one of the suspects to the 1900 block of Hope Street, where he chased the suspect into a nearby alley, police said.
One suspect was fatally shot on the scene, two more are at-large. The trooper did not return fire. Three suspects exited the vehicle and fled in different directions, police said in a news release. One of the suspects began firing at officers, and NOPD and State Police officers returned fire and struck the suspect, who later died at the scene.
Ballistics testing will be used to determine if a state trooper or NOPD officer fired the fatal shot or if the suspect took his own life. Both officers have been placed on administrative reassignment pending the ongoing investigation.
The trooper was in good condition Monday, Harrison said.
