Video shows off what appear to be working official Apple Lightning EarPods
The need for improved Bluetooth headphones would be heightened if Apple ditches the headphones jack with the next iPhone, as has been widely reported over the past several months. Unlike some previous “leaks”, these earphones do not have a clunky Lightning connector although the connector does appear to be slightly longer.
However, the introduction of the extra speaker could result in the elimination of the standard 3.5mm audio port. If this proved to be true, Apple would push sound through the Lightning jack, requiring adapters for all audio accessories including earphones and external speakers.
Assuming the video is legit and show Apple’s new earbuds, it’s likely this is what we’ll get in the box when the new iPhone models ship this fall.
Although there’s no confirmation as to when the Bluetooth device will launch, it’s speculated that the product could be announced in September, along with the iPhone 7. But in the wake of declining iPhone sales the past two quarters, the Cupertino-based tech firm still needs to emblazon the iPhone 7 with enough features to convince avid smartphone users to give the new device a shot, CNet reported. The video also shows us the iPhone 7 in the much-rumored blue casing for the first time.
If all of these leaks prove accurate, there will be more differences than ever before between the iPhone and iPhone Plus, which will help justify the premium. That’s all well and good, but if Apple is truly keen on eliminating a port as universal and reliable as the headphone jack, it surely must have something cool waiting in the wings to replace it, right? The jack first went into use in 1964, but gained widespread popularity in 1979 with the launch of Sony’s Walkman portable cassette player. However, Apple using in-house technology to develop the new device is entirely plausible. On the other hand, the change will essentially make your old 3.5mm headphones obsolete.
