Video shows Philip Chism following Danvers teacher Colleen Ritzer moments
Chism, who is charged with his teacher’s murder, is shown in the video clip following Ritzer into the women’s restroom.
According to testimony presented during the trial at Essex Superior Court this week, 11 minutes elapsed after Chism entered the bathroom before the motion activated security camera recorded another student unsuccessfully attempting to enter the bathroom.
The video shows then-14-year-old Philip Chism, with the hood of his jacket partially covering his face, following Colleen Ritzer as she walked alone in the hallway and into the a bathroom of Danvers High School on October 22, 2013. Prosecutors say he then used a recycling bin to move her body into the woods behind the school. Beside her was a bag with Chism’s homework and his photo ID.
State police Detective Lt. Michael Holleran said Ritzer’s body was under leaves in the same area where Chism is seen on video pulling the recycling bin.
There was blood on the clothes he was seen wearing in the surveillance video and on the shirt he was wearing when he was found wandering in Topsfield that night. Footage captured at the AMC Theater in Danvers on the day that Ritzer died shows a person prosecutors identifed as Chism purchasing tickets for “Gravity”. A reddish-brown stain on Chism’s left hand as well as brown stains on a box cutter also tested positive for blood, Scott said.
Chism has pleaded not guilty to murder, aggravated rape and robbery charges. One is whether the prosecution’s expert witness, Dr. Robert Kinscherff, will be allowed to testify about his opinion that Chism was in his right mind at the time of the attack.
