Villa, Lampard score in NYCFC win
The Montreal Impact will be without top scorer Ignacio Piatti for a game Sunday against New York City as he serves a one game suspension.
City assured itself of that distinction with a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo Sunday evening. It only took eight minutes for Benny Feilhaber to end the streak and despite Frank Lampard scoring his fourth goal in five games to even the score, the hosts put two more in the back of the net before the final whistle. It was Lampards fifth goal of the season.
However, striker Didier Drogba appears ready to return after missing three games with a thigh injury. He had another chance on a free kick from just over 20 yards in the 39th. Defender Victor Cabrera attempted to intercept a long pass from Thomas McNamara, but he lost his footing and that gave Villa a clear pass to the goal.
On the day Villa and Andrea Pirlo were named in the MLS All-Star squad set to face Arsenal next week, the former opened the scoring in the 35th minute – his league-leading 13th goal of the season before Harrison doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time. Right before the first half, in extra time, Harrison made it 2-0 for the visitors, with an intricate crossover dribble followed by a left-footed shot inside the left post.
Shipp got one back in the 55th on what looked like a pass from the left side intended for Drogba.
The third-place Red Bulls, who will host City at Red Bull Arena next Sunday, played at the second-place Philadelphia Union at 7 p.m. Sunday (last night). The Spanish giant will use the Impact’s training centre as its base while playing a pre-season tournament in the U.S.
