Vince McMahon addresses how XFL will handle national anthem protests
Aside from vague promises that the games would be faster and safer than the NFL, McMahon’s presser was light on specifics regarding the XFL.
“Democrat, Republican, Independent, I don’t care, and no one should”, said McMahon.
In December, McMahon sold 3.34 million shares in WWE for approximately $100 million to help fund Alpha Entertainment.
Isn’t this ideal? The XFL, which will start in 2020 as announced by WWE CEO Vince McMahon on Thursday, will need recognizable players.
“The new XFL will be fan-centric with all the things you like to see and less of the things you don’t”, he said. Perhaps having a couple years of true preparation for the launch is a sign McMahon wants to do it right this time.
It’s not yet known who will carry XFL games, be it a network or a streaming service.
“Every city is on our radar”, said McMahon. No cities or TV partners were named.
The USFL failed in the 1980s for many reasons, but the death blow was when the league – pushed by then-New Jersey Generals owner Donald Trump – thought it would be best to move from the spring to the fall and compete with the NFL. Vince insists he will still remain CEO and Chairman of the company and that the relaunched football league “won’t affect [WWE] at all”.
City officials have not spoken with the XFL about a team playing in Orlando, Mayor Buddy Dyer spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser said, but added, “this is something we would be interested in learning more about to bring to Orlando”.
The 25-year-old was expected to be a star of the National Football League, but struggled during a two-season stay at the Cleveland Browns and was cut in 2015 amid a series of off-field misdemeanours. Salaries will be determined, but McMahon said players will make more money for winning. “It depends on what the audience wants and how important we think that is”, he said.
Vince McMahon is officially moving forward with plans to bring back the XFL, the pro football league he launched in 2001 which lasted for one season.
The league is scheduled to start in 2020, and has been billed by McMahon as “football reimagined”.
Former NFL players like Tim Tebow would also be welcome to join the league, McMahon said. “And nothing to do with social issues, either”.
The first XFL lasted only a season, and was a joint venture between WWE and NBC.
McMahon said there will be a lot of differences between the National Football League and the new XFL, including the “quality of player”. One player separated his shoulder fighting for the ball.
“We’re going to give the game of football back to fans”.
