Viola Davis receives Golden Globe nomination
Lesbian romance drama Carol led the Golden Globe nominations yesterday with five nods, including the top category for best drama, while Wall Street misdeeds movie The Big Short led the comedy film categories with four nominations.
Johnny Depp is finished: In 2011, the actor’s widely derided film The Tourist somehow managed to snag Golden Globe nominations for best picture (musical or comedy), best actor for Depp and best actress for co-star Angelina Jolie.
The 2016 Golden Globe nominations were announced early Thursday morning – perhaps too early for presenter Dennis Quaid – and nearly immediately, this year’s hazy Oscar race became that much more clear.
The nominees for best director are Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), Ridley Scott (The Martian), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), and Todd Haynes (Carol).
Will Smith, whose upcoming “Concussion” has drawn headlines for its depiction of head trauma in football, joined the best actor, drama, nominees.
No love for the guy in the title: Sylvester Stallone is in the above category for “Creed” but the movie’s lead actor, Michael B. Jordan, got no love, left out of a category that includes Bryan Cranston, who’s not as good in “Trumbo”. Lowe is usually great – but the show is not and this one seems more like a nomination based on his fame and particularly the access granted to the HFPA reps.
Another interesting decision by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was to accept “Joy” and “The Martian”as comedies”.
And like the actresses of “Carol”, Steve Carell and Christian Bale will compete against one another in the best actor category.
This season, both The Golden Globes and The SAG Awards showed just how crowded the television production company space is. – Rami Malek on his family’s response to his nomination for best actor in a TV drama for “Mr. Robot”.
Alicia Vikander – Nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama “The Danish Girl” and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “Ex-Machina”: “I am truly thrilled and grateful to the HFPA for both these wonderful nominations!”
Jenji Kohan, creator of best TV comedy nominee “Orange Is The New Black”: “Very cool to be recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association”. I didn’t see “Peanuts” and think the Pixar’s are just OK but really happy about “Anomalisa” (which deserved a screenplay nod as well) and “Shaun”. The Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 10, 2016, 8 to 11 p.m., hosted by Ricky Gervais, who is sure to insult the HFPA, who are at least good sports about the whole thing.
And that’s probably because none of the actors in the film are being campaigned for lead role nominations.
SURPRISE: Lady Gaga, “American Horror Story” No offense to Gaga’s glam turn as a vampy seductress on the most gonzo installment to date of FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story”, but awards buzz for her work hasn’t exactly been deafening.
The nominees for best actress in a comedy or musical are Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Lily Tomlin (Grandma), and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van). Only one broadcast network, Fox, is represented in the best drama category, with “Empire”.
