Viola Davis says ‘the problem is not with the Oscars’
Andrea Davis, an associate professor specializing in cultures of the Americas at York University in Toronto, agrees that the absence of racially diverse Oscar nominees, including black actors, has a broader influence on society.
It prompted us to ask: Does #OscarsSoWhite have any merit? The hashtag went viral within a week, Reign said.
“People even complain even when we have a lot of nominations”.
Republican-dominated industries would not be allowed to get away with this.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Davis shared what she felt was the real problem behind the Oscars’ all-white acting nominee slate: Hollywood.
Curiously, Rampling, the Oscar nominated (white) British actress, appears to think the opposite, suggesting that calls from black actors and others for Oscar diversity might be “anti-white racism”.
“Straight Outta Compton”, a biopic about rap group N.W.A, also saw critical and commercial success. “The films that are being made, are the big-time producers thinking outside of the box in terms of how to cast the role?” she told ET.
On Tuesday, the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, released a statement addressing the lack of diversity among Award nominees.
“There was a resurgence because things have not been resolved”.
The television personality said it “would be the most electrifying moment in Oscars history”. Neither will Michael Moore or Spike Lee.
“Like I said, the Oscars are not really the issue”, she said. But if he does, I hope he takes it as an opportunity to make a statement, a social statement about change. “The executives, when they have these green-light meetings quarterly where they look at the scripts, they decide who’s in it and they decide what we’re making and what we’re not making”.
Her husband, actor and star of “Concussion“, Will Smith, has also announced that he will not be in attendance. (D-N.J.), also with the Congressional Black Caucus, told HuffPost that the Academy Awards is not alone in its failure.
“I’m very encouraged by the fact that Hollywood is standing up and taking notice”, Reign said.
Each year, blacks make about 195 million visits to movie theaters, spending an estimated $6.3 billion. Slowly, we’ve seen progress as more people of color star in major blockbusters and smaller films that see nominations and awards at the Golden Globes and Oscars. The first Oscar won by a black performer was Hattie McDaniel for her role in “Gone With The Wind” in 1939.
Though, not necessarily because she is joining the boycott against the show.
