Violent crime rate down for 8th year in a row: StatsCan
Winnipeg’s crime rate dropped by 4 per cent to 5,398 crimes per 100,000 people.
Overall in the province, the crime rate and crime severity index went down.
Stats Canada measured crime rates for 33 different communities across the country.
According to numbers released by the agency, there were 763 break and enters for every 100,000 people, the highest rate in Canada.
Those increases were offset by an overall decline in the number of reported sexual assaults against adults.
“This is social issue we have got to fix”, Weighill said, noting that the city has to tackle social issues like poverty, racism and housing in order for the crime rate to fall.
Despite the slight increase, the homicide rate remained basically unchanged.
London’s overall crime rate has dropped 18% between 2004 and 2014, whereas the national crime rate has declined 34% during that same period.
Alberta had the fourth highest CSI among the Canadian provinces, behind Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia.
Regina’s crime rate was 7,858 per 100,000 people, down four incidents from 2013. The national average is 66.7.
Overall in Saskatchewan, the crime rate and crime severity index went down.
– Alberta’s crime severity index rose by one per cent, and had a steady crime rate.
Crimes reported to police fell three per cent across the country from 2013 to 2014 for the 11th consecutive year, Statistics Canada said Wednesday. Police reported approximately 1.4 million non-violent incidents in 2014, of which about 1.1 million were property crimes.
Canada’s crime rate dropped previous year to its lowest level since 1969, while Edmonton was among the metropolitan areas where serious crime increased slightly.
