Virginia Caps Unlikely Comeback Against Wake Forest With Buzzer-Beating Banked Three
After two missed free throws by the Demon Deacons, Virginia advanced the ball down court for senior guard Malcolm Brogdon to hit a trey with six seconds to play, cutting the lead to 70-69.
The Cavaliers reeled off a 9-1 run in the final 15 seconds of their game against Wake Forest to escape with the 72-71 win.
The Cavaliers didn’t necessarily overcome that problem in this win. Naturally, Thompson’s game-winner crushed every non-Cavalier soul in the house. But Wake Forest has struggled to slow opposing offenses, allowing a conference-worst 79.1 points per game while giving up 80 or more points four times this month. But after Gill’s dunk with 46.3 seconds to play made it 66-63, Virginia had three consecutive scoreless possessions while Wake Forest hit 4 of 6 free throws to push its lead to 70-63.
The Demon Deacons came in with a (1-6) record in the ACC. UVA came in ranked #11 in the country. They made four in the last minute against Wake Forest. Anthony Gill also added 17 points for the Cavs.
UVA will play Louisville on Saturday at 1 p.m., with coverage at 12:30 p.m. on AM-1070 and 98.9 FM WINA. Wade Baldwin IV led Vanderbilt with 24 points, scoring 10 of the Commodores’ final 14 points to preserve the victory….
In other games involving SEC men’s teams, Michael Carrera had a career high 34 points and 15 rebounds and SC outlasted Mississippi State 84-74. “We know that the league that we play in, night in and night out, it’s going to be a beast”, Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said after the Demon Deacons’ 77-63 loss Saturday at Miami (Fla.).
