Virginia Recalling Specialty License Plates With Confederate Flag
On June 26, Herring filed a motion to have that injunction dissolved and vacate an order requiring the flag to be placed on Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates.
Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles will begin recalling specialty license plate depicting the Confederate battle flag following a federal judge’s decision last week to dissolve an injunction allowing the image.
He added that “Virginia state government does not have to and will not endorse such a divisive symbol”.
Spokesmen for the DMV and for state Attorney General Mark Herring said Thursday evening that the government would immediately begin the process of recalling the plates and issuing newly designed plates to those who want them.
But the judge rejected that argument.
“When the Supreme Court speaks, district courts must listen”, Kiser wrote in his opinion. Then the plate has to be manufactured and sent to holders of the specialty plate. The Commonwealth’s rationale for singling out [Sons of Confederate Veterans] for different treatment is no longer relevant.
A recent story by the Richmond Times Dispatch stated that the Richmond and Tri-Cities region has the most Confederate heritage supporters. There are 1,700 of them registered in the state. Chesterfield County topped the RTD list with 111 plates, while Hanover had the second highest amount. ave the power to make such an order, but that the Texas ruling does not necessarily apply to Virginia. The oral ruling was enough for the state to say it would stop issuing the license plates, but state officials wanted to wait for the written ruling before moving to recall existing plates.
