Vladimir Putin says Russia ‘will not forget’ Turkish downing of warplane
When Turkey shot down Russia’s warplane on November 24, the aircraft was striking groups that Turkey supports in Syria’s north – ethnic Turkmen who oppose Syria’s president. “And it seems Allah chose to punish the ruling clique in Turkey by relieving them of their sense and judgment”.
Currently, there are no signs of any rapid recuperation of the ties between the two countries.
Russian Federation has announced sanctions against Ankara banning the import of some Turkish food and reintroducing visas for visitors from the country, and Putin insisted Turkey would be made to regret its actions.
“Only Allah knows why they did it”, Putin said about the downing in an hourlong address to Russian lawmakers and other public figures, Russia’s own state of the union address.
The Russian and Turkish foreign ministers met in Belgrade on the sidelines of the OSCE meeting – the first senior-level meeting since the incident – but the exchange was frosty. “Every day it produces a variety of lies”, Davutoglu said.
“The immoral side of this issue is involving my family in the affair”, Erdogan added.
“Look, Russia has to prove that the Turkish republic buys oil from Daesh, otherwise this is a slander”, he added, using an Arabic acronym for IS extremists.
Putin called Thursday for a broad worldwide front against terrorism and accused Turkey of trading oil with the Islamic State group. “Turkey has not lost its moral values to buy oil from a terror organization”.
“There was a Soviet propaganda machine in the Cold War era”, Davutoglu told reporters at an Ankara airport before leaving for Azerbaijan on an official visit. In particular, he said, Russia’s exchange rate has stabilized, inflation has decreased compared to 2014, and capital flight has decreased. “The accusations should end”.
As a country that was unhappy when other countries imposed sanctions on them, Russiashould not do the same, Davutoğlu stated. One of its two pilots was reportedly shot dead by Syrian rebels while parachuting.
IS on Wednesday released a video in which a Russian-speaking man identifies himself as Magomed Khasayev, confesses to spying for Russian intelligence and then is shown apparently being beheaded by another Russian-speaking man. Nor has the Russian leader taken his phone calls. “We will reveal it to the world”, said Mr Erdogan, according to the Daily Mail.
“No one can blame Turkey, no one can expect an apology from Turkey”, Davutoglu said in the speech, which was televised on Turkish television.
U.S., French and British jets have targeted Islamic-controlled oil fields in Syria as part of a campaign to cut the financial lifeline of the militant group.
Erdogan earlier promised to step down if such claims are proven true.
“Iraq, Libya and Syria have turned into zones of chaos and anarchy which threaten the whole world”, he said.
He at the same time added that Russian Federation is not planning to engage in military saber-rattling, Reuters reported.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the president’s statement didn’t mean that Russian military officers have been put in charge of some Syrian army units or deployed to the frontline to help coordinate the air strikes. “The Russians have tried it with support for the Syrian armed forces”, he says.
