Vladimir Putin spokesman denies phone conversation with Sir Elton John on gay
But the Kremlin firmly denied the president had contacted the singer and hinted the call could have been a hoax.
“That is not true.
There was no conversation”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday, according to the Russian state-run news agency Sputnik.
Whether or not the call actually happened, having a public figure and advocate of John’s status speak to Putin about LGBT rights would be a landmark event considering Russia’s almost unflinching view towards the issue. He said: “Thank you. This day, and the conversation was the most wonderful and handsome in my life”.
So when the phone rang, with Putin apparently on the other end, John couldn’t pass on the opportunity.
The singer said he wanted to talk about Putin’s “ridiculous” stance and comments from the Russian leader that gay people prey on children. “If he’s ready to learn about how we don’t categorise people by any certain characteristics in Russian Federation, I’m happy to explain it to him”.
You might think that Putin’s sudden desire to chat with Elton John is a bit surprising. He communicated his yearning to talk with Putin about the issue in a meeting with the BBC distributed on Saturday.
On Monday, Elton John surprised his Instagram followers by announcing that he had spoken to Vladimir Putin-Russia’s president and $3,000 sweatsuit connoisseur-earlier in the day. Milonov offered on the air to meet with John to tell him how he was “deeply and systematically mistaken”.
Peskov did say, however, that Putin may yet agree to meet Sir Elton.
Two Russian pranksters have claimed they impersonated Vladimir Putin during a “phone call” to Sir Elton John.
Sir Elton’s post came days after he criticised Putin’s attitude towards gay rights during a BBC interview.
Russia’s law against “homosexual propaganda” – begun in St Petersburg but now nationwide – outlaws information aimed at children that “denies traditional family values”.
